Problems Ejecting One of Two Identical PC Card Devices (227248)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q227248

SYMPTOMS

If your Windows 2000-based computer contains two identical PC Card devices and you want to eject one of them, there is no way using the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" tool to distinguish which slot contains the device you want to eject. Consequently, you may remove a device for which the driver is still running, causing possible data loss or other problems.

For example:
  • Using two ATA flash memory cards may result in data loss if the incorrect ATA flash card is ejected.
  • Using two PC Card modems for multilink Dial-Up Networking.
  • Using two PC Card network adapters for multihomed networking.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
