OFF2000: Linked Picture Cannot Be Viewed in a Browser (226621)

SYMPTOMS

When Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 or Microsoft Word 2000 links a slide or other document to an image file and that slide or document is viewed as a Web page, the image file is not visible. You may see only an object placeholder where the image should be.

The type of image files for which this behavior occurs depends upon which Web browser you use to view the Web page.

CAUSE

Microsoft Internet Explorer and other Web browsers do not currently support all available picture filters.

WORKAROUND

Most Web browsers support the .jpg, .png, and .gif image files. To ensure that all Web browsers can view your linked images, convert all your image files to one of these file types before you link the images.

Internet Explorer 5 supports the .wmf picture file. Internet Explorer 5 with VGX supports .emf, .emz, and .wmz files, in addition to .jpg, .png, and .gif picture files.

If Microsoft Office filters are installed, Internet Explorer with VGX uses those filters to display pictures in non-Office native formats like .tif. This enables all intranet users to browse the same "paperless" internal documents.

CAUTION: If you are using Internet Explorer, remember that even if a document appears correctly when viewed as a Web page, it may not be viewable by someone who is not using Internet Explorer.
