  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0a
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5

This article was previously published under Q225481

SYMPTOMS

If programs are running when you install BackOffice Small Business Server, a pop-up dialog box appears informing you there are programs running in the background and that these programs should be closed.

You have the option to click OK or Cancel. If you click Cancel and do not close the programs, the installation process continues.

However, at the end of the installation process, Proxy Server is not installed and Setup does not mark the Proxy Server installation as being unsuccessful in Event Viewer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, close all open programs during installation. This prevents problems associated with files being copied by Setup, but which may be in use by programs that are currently running on your computer. For BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0 and 4.0a:
  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add Remove Programs.
  2. Click Microsoft Small Business Server.
  3. When the SBS Setup program starts, click Next until the list of programs appear. Select Proxy Server, and then continue with the installation.
For BackOffice Small Business Server version 4.5:
  1. Insert CD 2 into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Double-click My Computer, and then double-click on your CD-ROM drive letter.
  3. Double-click the Proxy folder.
  4. Run Setup from this folder. After the installation process is complete, Proxy Server should work as expected.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a, and 4.5.
