SBS client Help page icons may not be displayed correctly on Asian versions of Windows 95 (225312)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5

This article was previously published under Q225312

SYMPTOMS

Icons on BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) client Help pages for items such as printers, shares, or users may be displayed as characters from another symbol set (for example, the letters A, B, C, and so on).

CAUSE

The SBS client Help pages use symbols that are stored in an .eot file on the server. The .eot file is downloaded to client computers whenever a Help page is visited. Computers that run both Asian versions of Microsoft Windows 95 (retail version) and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 are unable to render .eot files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, manually install the appropriate TrueType fonts from the server to the Asian Windows 95 (retail version) clients:
  1. On the SBS computer, locate the following files:
    • Glyph100.ttf
    • Glyph110.ttf
These files should be located in the %SystemRoot%\Fonts folder. The files are also located in the SBSAdmin\I386\Admin\Components folder on SBS CD-ROM 3.
  2. Copy these files to the SBS computer. Place them in a shared folder for which all clients have permissions.
  3. On each Windows 95 client running Internet Explorer 5:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Fonts.
    3. On the File menu, click Install New Fonts.
    4. Click Network, and then open the shared folder that was created in step 2.
    5. Click both fonts, and make sure the Copy fonts to font folder check box is selected.
    6. To install the fonts, click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows 95 (Japanese, Korean, and Chinese versions).

MORE INFORMATION

On some Windows 95-based computers, the Install New Fonts command may not be displayed on the File menu. This can occur for many reasons, but often occurs because the System attribute is missing from the %SystemRoot%\Fonts folder.
