XFOR: SMTP Service Doesn't Retry on 4xx Errors (224983)

SYMPTOMS

With the SMTP service version 1877.19, if you send a message to a server that issues a 4xx response to any of the following:

EHLO, MAIL FROM:, RCPT TO:, or DATA

The SMTP service may issue a QUIT, and immediately try again, resulting in a potential loop.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.
