OL2000: Contacts with Duplicate E-mail Addresses Not Detected If Dragged to Another Folder (224889)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q224889

SYMPTOMS

When you drag a Contact from one message store folder to another message store, the duplicate detection feature does not work.

RESOLUTION

To prevent contacts with identical e-mail addresses from being created, create a temporary Contacts folder to move the contacts into before moving them to your destination Contacts folder. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Create a folder containing contact items in the same store that you want to move the contacts to. For example, if you want to move contacts from another store into your default Contacts folder, create a folder containing contact items and name it Contacts2.
  2. Drag the contacts into the Contacts2 folder.
  3. Drag the contacts from the Contacts2 folder, to the appropriate Contacts folder. If two contacts have the same address, you will be asked if you want to replace the contact or not.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Duplicate detection is a new feature in Outlook. When you add a contact, Outlook checks to see if it is a potential duplicate, if so, you are prompted for a resolution. There are three possible actions you can take when prompted; you can update the original contact, add the contact as a duplicate, or not add the contact.

This problem only occurs when moving contacts between different message stores. This may occur in the following scenarios:
  • Moving contacts from a personal folder to another personal folder, or a Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox, or public folder.
  • Moving contacts from an Exchange Server mailbox to another Exchange Server mailbox, public folder, or a personal folder.
  • Moving contacts from a public folder to a personal folder, or an Exchange Server mailbox.
