WD2000: Problems with Hyperlink Beginning with Number Sign (#) (224761)

SYMPTOMS

When you enter a hyperlink into a document and the hyperlink begins with the number sign character (#), editing the hyperlink replaces the number sign character (#) with "/ - ".

For example, the hyperlink,

http://#WebSite/MyWebPage

after editing, changes to,

http:/// - WebSite/MyWebPage

When you click the hyperlink, either before or after you edit the hyperlink, the following error message appears:
Cannot connect to the Internet server.
NOTE: When you edit the hyperlink in Word, the Text to display box replaces the number sign character (#) with "/ - ".

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, if possible, change the Web site or Web page name to remove the number sign character (#).

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

To edit a hyperlink in Word:
  1. Right-click the hyperlink to display the shortcut menu.
  2. On the shortcut menu, point to Hyperlink and then click Edit Hyperlink.
