WD2000: Style Numbering Changes When Resetting Numbering Gallery (224743)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q224743

SYMPTOMS

When you have defined a style to include paragraph numbering (on the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering), and then you reset the numbering by clicking Reset in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, the style loses the numbering definition, and either the text formatted with the style loses its numbering, or the numbering changes.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. When you reset the number gallery position that you have defined as part of a style, the following occur:
  • The custom number gallery position to which your style refers no longer exists; numbering is removed from the style.
  • The reset (default) numbering style for the selected numbered gallery item is directly applied to the paragraph where your insertion point is.
  • All other paragraphs defined with the style lose their numbering, because numbering is no longer defined as part of the style.
