SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade to Microsoft Word 2000 over Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows, the compatibility options are set to Custom.

For example, when you upgrade from Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows to Microsoft Word 2000, the compatibility options are set to Custom with the following options selected:
  • Align table rows independently
  • Allow table rows to lay out apart
  • Auto space like Word 95
  • Balance SBCS character and DBCS characters
  • Convert backslash characters into yen signs
  • Don't expand character spaces on the line ending SHIFT+RETURN
  • Don't use HTML paragraph auto spacing
  • Draw underline on trailing spaces
  • Forget last tab alignment
  • Lay out AutoShapes like Word 97
  • Lay out footnotes like Word 6.x/95/97
  • Lay out tables with raw width
  • Use Word 6.x/95 border rules
  • Use Word 97 line-breaking rules for Asian text
NOTE: To check compatibility options, click Options on the Tools menu and then click to select the Compatibility tab.

WORKAROUND

To change the compatibility options in Word, do the following steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Compatibility tab, change the Recommended options for box to Microsoft Word 2000 and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
