  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q223885
NOTE: The procedures in this article only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. With this option, you can use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. If you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation, you see "Corporate or Workgroup".

SYMPTOMS

If you use Find Items in the Address Book to search on the Alias Name field, you may not receive an exact match even though the alias you searched for is valid in the Global Address List (GAL). You may receive a choice of several user names that start with the text string you typed into the Alias Name field.

CAUSE

The search is a prefix search so it lists all people whose alias starts with the text string you typed into the Alias Name field. This is a design feature so that the search is not too restrictive.

RESOLUTION

To work around this, type an equal sign (=) in front of your search string in the Alias Name field. This will force a restrictive search on the text string.
