SBS: Setting Up SBS Without a Network Adapter Being Detected (222489)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0a
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5

This article was previously published under Q222489

SYMPTOMS

When you install Small Business Server 4.5, you receive an informational dialog box containing the following message:
A Setup parameter specified by your system administrator or computer manufacturer is missing or invalid. Setup may therefore ask you to provide this information.

You may wish to inform your system administrator or computer manufacturer that the "DetectAdapters" value is missing or invalid.
This dialog box may also be followed by another dialog box later in the installation process that contains the following message:
There is no network adapter installed on the computer. Small Business Server requires a network adapter to operate correctly. Do you want to proceed anyway?

RESOLUTION

These dialog boxes appear when the setup is unable to detect a network interface card (NIC) in the computer. However, it is possible to ignore this message and continue through the setup completion, which installs the MS Loopback Adapter. After setup completes, the NIC can be installed by running the Hardware Setup Wizard (click Control Panel, double-click Network, and then click the Adapter tab).

If there is a network card present, click the link below for information on the Hardware Compatibility List for Small Business Server: If the network card is present and on the Small Business Server Hardware Compatibility List, contact the hardware vendor to troubleshoot the network card hardware failure. Small Business Server will not function properly until a detectable network card is installed.
