OL2000: ErrMsg: "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook" After Network Installation (222404)

SYMPTOMS

After you run Outlook Setup from a network administration install and then disconnect from the installation site, you may receive the following message when you start Outlook for the first time:
Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot initialize Microsoft Office shared utilities. Please restart your computer or reinstall Microsoft Outlook 2000.

CAUSE

During setup, in the Select Features dialog box, you choose the option, Run all from Network from the list for Microsoft Office. This option prevents certain shared programs from being installed on your computer, even if you choose Run all from My Computer from the list.

RESOLUTION

If you intend to mix the install states of various components of Office, the top level must be set to, Run from My Computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
