OL2000: Text Pasted from RTF Source Appears Unintelligible (222383)

SYMPTOMS

If you paste text copied from a Rich Text Format (RTF) source such as Microsoft Word, into an Outlook Plain Text message, the text may be readable up to a point, but become unintelligible if certain special characters are encountered.

CAUSE

The Plain Text message is designed to accommodate only a single character style.

RESOLUTION

Use either the Outlook Rich Text, or HTML message formats.

If you must use a Plain Text message format, follow these steps:
  1. Copy and paste the text from the RTF source into a Windows Notepad file.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As name the file and click Save. Close the file and then open the Notepad file a second time. If prompted to save other formatting such as Unicode, click Yes to continue. This saves the file in Notepad text.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Select All. On the Edit menu, click Copy. Switch to Outlook and paste the text into a Plain Text message. Characters that are not preserved may display as a question mark or block character. The remaining text is preserved.
