SYMPTOMS

In Outlook, hyperlinks behave differently, depending on which mail format you are using to compose the message.

HTML Format

When using the HTML message format, Outlook turns message text in the form of a fully qualified link, or text that appears to be a link, into a live link when the recipient opens the message. For example, Outlook turns the following text into what appears to be live links: 

http://www.microsoft.com (fully qualified)

www.microsoft.com (appears as a link)

NOTE: Although these links appear to be live in the HTML message when it is composed, they are not live until you send the message and the recipient opens it. If you do not press either the SPACEBAR or the ENTER key after you type the hyperlink, the link will not be live when the message is received.

Microsoft Outlook Rich Text (RTF) or Plain Text Format

When using the RTF or Plain Text format, Outlook turns message text in the form of fully qualified links or that appear to be links, into live links in the message being composed. For example, Outlook turns the following text strings into live links: 

http://www.microsoft.com (fully qualified)

www.microsoft.com (appears as a link)

These links are live when the message is composed, and when the message is opened by the recipient.

NOTE: Outlook may turn a text string into what appears to be a live link, but it does not assure that the link is a valid address, or that the recipient can use the link.
