PRB: Cannot install Enterprise Edition on Windows NT Server (222106)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 7.0

This article was previously published under Q222106

SYMPTOMS

Attempting to install SQL Server 7.0 from a compact disc included in a Standard Edition package may return the following error message when you attempt to install it on Windows NT Server version 4.0:
The Enterprise Edition server component cannot be installed on Windows NT Server using this CD. Only client components will be available for installation.

CAUSE

One of the outside vendors that Microsoft uses for compact disc duplication mistakenly produced a batch of SQL Server 7.0 Standard Edition compact discs with the Enterprise Edition software on them. The label, part number, and so forth, on the compact disc indicate that it is a Standard Edition but the software on the compact disc is actually from the Enterprise Edition. Because you cannot install the Enterprise Edition on anything but Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise, you will see this error.

WORKAROUND

Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) customers should call the MSDN Fulfillment Center at 1-800-759-5474.

MORE INFORMATION

If you are running Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise, SQL Server will install without problems and you may not realize you have the Enterprise Edition. To see which version you have installed, run the following query:
select @@version
