INF: Err Msg "Cannot Obtain Server's Start Directory From Registry" (221592)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server OLAP Services 7.0
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions)

This article was previously published under Q221592

SUMMARY

OLAP Server saves and uses the path for the directory where the data is saved in the registry under the following:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OLAP Server\CurrentVersion\RootDir

For example, for a default installation the value will be:
   C:\Program Files\OLAP Services\Data

NOTE: The drive letter may vary. During startup, the server tries to read this registry key and if it fails to do that, startup fails with the following error message:
Cannot obtain server's start directory from registry.
There may be several generic reasons why this can fail. For example, if this value does not exist at all or if permission is denied on it. One of the other specific reasons why it may fail is if the size of this value is greater than 102 characters. So, during installation make sure that the size of the path of the Data directory is limited to 102 characters. You can also change the path after installation by using the Data Folder box in the Properties dialog box.
