OFF2000: OSB Buttons Display Question Marks and Do Not Start Programs (220730)

SYMPTOMS

When you start the Office Shortcut Bar (OSB), the buttons on your toolbar may display question marks. If you click one of the toolbar buttons, you may receive the following error:
The Managed Software Installer failed to install the program associated with this file. Please contact you system administrator.
When you click OK, you receive the following error:
Cannot run this program or open this file.
NOTE: You may have to refresh the buttons on the toolbar to see them displayed as question marks.

CAUSE

You may receive these errors if both of the following are true:
  • You had a beta version of Office 2000 installed previously. -and-

  • You used the OSB with the beta version of Office 2000.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and click Windows Explorer.
  2. Locate the \Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Shortcut Bar\Office folder on your hard disk drive.
  3. Delete the following shortcuts:

    Microsoft Excel
    Microsoft PowerPoint
    Microsoft Word
    New Office Document
    Open Office Document
    Screen Saver

  4. Locate the \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Shortcut Bar\Office folder on your hard disk drive.
  5. Copy the shortcuts from this folder into the \Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Shortcut Bar\Office folder.
NOTE: The location of \Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Shortcut Bar\Office folder varys according to the version of Microsoft Windows you are using and if you have Profiles enabled. See the following table for details.
