This article was previously published under Q220397

SYMPTOMS

After you shade an irregular table in Word and view the table in a Web browser, the irregular table may appear with additional table cells shaded.

For example, if you draw and shade the following table:

the table may appear as the following when you view the Word document in a Web browser:

NOTE: This problem also occurs when you save your Word document as a Web page and then view the Web page in a Web browser.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you apply the shading to the entire table. When you draw irregular table cells and view as a Web page (on the File menu, click Web Page Preview), Word adds table cell placeholders within the table. When you apply shading to the table, the table cell placeholders are also shaded.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, apply the shading to the individual cells of your table using the following steps:
  1. Place the insertion point in one cell of your table.
  2. On the Table menu, point to Select and then click Cell.
  3. On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading.
  4. On the Shading tab, click the shading you want. Change the Apply to box to Cell and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
