WD2000: Password Options Are Not Available When Saving Web Page As a Word Document (220395)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q220395

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Web page for editing in Word and then try to save the file as a Word document, the file-sharing options for Password to open and Password to modify are turned off, and the following error message may appear:
This item is disabled because it's not supported by Web Browsers.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. The file-sharing passwords that are available for Word documents are turned off within the Word interface when you are editing Web HTML files.

Password protection is a Word document feature and is not supported by other file formats. Saving a document to a format other than a Word document results in the loss of this protection.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, save the file as a native Word document first without a password, and then file-sharing passwords can be applied to the document.
