This article was previously published under Q220360

SYMPTOMS

When you edit or paste an object with rotated text, the text alignment becomes horizontal.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. Word currently does not support rotated text objects.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Rotate the Text Inside the Object then Resize to Fit

You may be able to rotate the text inside the object using the Text Box toolbar, and then resize your object to fit the realigned text. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click to select your drawing object containing the rotated text.
  2. On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Text Box.
  3. On the Text Box toolbar, click the Change Text Direction button to rotate the text.
For more information about resizing drawing objects in Word, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type resize drawing in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.

Method 2: Duplicate Using Word Drawing Objects

You can use the Drawing toolbar in Word to duplicate the rotated object, and then align or rotate the text within using the Text Box toolbar.

NOTE: To view the Text Box toolbar, point to Toolbars on the View menu, and then click Text Box.

For more information about using drawing objects in Word, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type drawing in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.
