The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q220353

SYMPTOMS

When you type, edit, delete, or copy and paste text within a table, you may experience slow keyboard or screen update performance if any one of the following conditions is true:
  • You are working in any view in Word. For example, on the View menu, click Print Layout or Normal.

    -or-
  • The table contains vertically merged cells.

    -or-
  • The table breaks across pages of your Word document.

WORKAROUND

One of the following methods may help to improve performance while you edit text in a table.

Method 1: Save the File as Rich Text Format

Save your file as Rich Text Format (*.rtf) and then save it back to Word Document (*.doc) format. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open your Word file that contains the table.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save As dialog box, change the Save as type box to Rich Text Format (*.rtf), change the name of the file in the File name box if you want, and then click Save.
  4. Close and reopen the file that you saved in step 3.
  5. On the File menu, click Save As.
  6. In the Save As dialog box, change the Save as type box to Word Document (*.doc), change the name of the file in the File name box, and then click Save.

NOTE: Be sure to save your new Word file as a new file name. Do not overwrite or replace the existing file. If this procedure corrects the problems you were experiencing with the old file, you can delete the old file and use the new file to continue making changes.
  7. Try making changes to your new Word file.

Method 2: Use Normal Draft Mode

  1. On the View menu, click Normal.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the View tab, click to select Draft font (in the Outline and Normal options section), and then click OK.
  4. On the Table menu, click Hide Gridlines.
