WD2000: Cannot Open Web Page Created in PowerPoint (220251)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q220251

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Web page that was created in Microsoft PowerPoint, one of the following occurs:

Case 1

When you open the Web page, the file opens in PowerPoint and does not open in Word.

Case 2

When you right-click the Web page in the Open dialog box and then click Open in Microsoft Word, a blank Web page is opened.

CAUSE

Case 1

When a Web page is saved from PowerPoint, the association of the file is saved as part of the file header. When you try to open the Web page in Word, the header is read, and PowerPoint is automatically started to open the page.

Case 2

In PowerPoint, when you save as a Web page, the presentation is saved as several different files and formats. When you open the file with Microsoft Word, Word doesn't understand the extensible markup language (XML) coded links and ignores the links to the individual files.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
