Remedy Help Desk Notifier Causes GP Fault in Module Tirpc.dll (219008)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q219008

SYMPTOMS

When you start the Notifier tool included with Remedy Help Desk after you upgrade to Internet Explorer 5, you may receive the following error message:
NOTIFIER caused a general protection fault in module TIRPC.DLL at 0001:00004a94.

CAUSE

This error message is caused by an increase in the amount of stack space used by Wininet.dll in Internet Explorer 5. Because Notifier is a 16-bit Windows-based program, it cannot account for this additional stack space usage. This causes a stack overflow.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, add a "NOTIFIER=0x400000" line to the [Compatibility] section of the Win.ini file:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type win.ini, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the [Compatibility] section of the Win.ini file.
  4. Add a NOTIFIER=0x400000 line to the section.
  5. On the File menu, click Save.
  6. On the File menu, click Exit.
  7. Restart your computer.
