OL2000: Inappropriate Error Message on First Run of Outlook (218400)

SYMPTOMS

When starting Outlook for the first time you may receive one of the following error messages.

If you choose the Corporate Workgroup (CW) mode:
Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong version. This could have been cause by installing other messaging software. Please reinstall outlook.
If you choose the Internet Mail Only (IMO) mode:
The operation failed.

CAUSE

These error messages may be misleading. You may have insufficient disk space to run Outlook.

RESOLUTION

Free up some disk drive space and restart Outlook.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
