This article was previously published under Q218385

SYMPTOMS

If you cancel the prompt for a personal folders password and then later attempt to open, view properties, or expand the personal folders file, you may receive the following error messages:
Unable to display the folder. The server is not available. Contact your administrator if this condition persists.

-or-

Unable to expand the folder. The set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available. Contact your administrator if this condition persists.

-or-

The set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available. Contact your administrator if this condition persists.
You are not prompted for the password again and cannot open the personal folders.

If the personal folders file is also your default delivery location or contains Net Folders, you may receive the password prompt when Outlook starts instead of when you first attempt to open the personal folders.

RESOLUTION

Quit and restart Outlook. When you next attempt to open the password-protected personal folders file, you will receive a prompt for the password.

If you want to open the personal folders file without being prompted for a password, you can click to select Save this password in your password list in the Personal Folders Password dialog box. When you start Outlook you will be able to access your personal folders without entering a password.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
