SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Exchange Server versions 5.0 SP1 and SP2 may generate an Offline Address Book (OAB) that results in an offline user occasionally receiving non-delivery reports (NDRs) when attempting to send messages to particular addresses in the OAB. The error message returned to the sender may be similar to the following:
No transport provider was available for delivery to this recipient.

CAUSE

This may occur when two identical aliases exist for different users in separate sites.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.0 servicepack that contains this hotfix.
