This article was previously published under Q216792

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Publisher 98, you may receive one of the following error messages:
The specified volume does not support long file names. You must select a destination that supports long file names, or force the use of short file names. To force short file names, exit now and restart setup with the /f command line option.

-OR-

Setup Error 914 in Object 110
NOTE: You will receive Setup Error 914 in other objects as well.

CAUSE

Microsoft Publisher 98 is not designed to install on systems or networks that only support the DOS file structure, also known as the 8.3 naming convention, or short filenames.

The setup that installs Microsoft Publisher 98 as well as Microsoft Office 97, is designed to detect a DOS (8.3) file structure. Setup requires the /f option to install properly on these systems. Office 97 is written to support the /f option, however Publisher 98 is not.

When you run Publisher 98 setup on a system that does not support long file names, setup will require the /f option, which will generate the first error message in the SYMPTOMS section. Because Publisher does not understand this option, the second error in the SYMPTOMS section will occur, when you start Publisher setup with the /f option.

RESOLUTION

The only resolution to this issue is to install or enable long file name support on the computer (or network) that you are installing Microsoft Publisher 98. To do so, consult your Operating System documentation or contact your Network Administrator.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
