PRJ98: Task Becomes Critical When Rescheduling Remaining Work or Splitting Task (216646)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q216646

SYMPTOMS

When you update your project by using the Reschedule uncompleted work to start option, Microsoft Project calculates a task as critical that should be noncritical.

NOTE: To access the Reschedule uncompleted work to start option, point to Tracking on the Tools menu, and then click Update Project.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when all of the following conditions are true:

  • The task's Task type is Fixed Duration.

  • The task's progress is greater than zero percent complete.

  • The task is not complete.
-and-
  • You update your project by using the Reschedule uncompleted work to start option, and then use it a second time, with a date later than when you first rescheduled the uncompleted work.

    -or-

  • You split the task and then move the split to a later date.

WORKAROUND

This behavior corrects itself if you increase the progress on the task beyond its current value.

Otherwise, to work around this problem, change the Task type to Fixed Work or Fixed Units and then change it back to Fixed Duration. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Select the task that unexpectedly displays as critical.
  2. On the Project menu, click Task Information; then click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Task type list, click Fixed Units. Click OK.
  4. On the Project menu, click Task Information; then click the Advanced tab.
  5. In the Task type list, click Fixed Duration. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
