Err Msg: Setup Can't Install the Msjstick.inf File and Cannot Complete Installation... (214695)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller software, you may receive the following error message:

Setup can't install the Msjstick.inf file and cannot complete installation.

It may be the disk or an undefined compatibility issue.

Remove the setup disk, restart your computer, and rerun Setup.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the SideWinder Game Controller software installation program cannot create a folder named Other inside the Windows\Inf folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, create a new folder named Other inside the Windows\Inf folder before you install the SideWinder Game Controller software. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK

    drive:\Windows\Inf

    where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Windows is installed.
  3. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
  4. Type Other, and then press ENTER.

    NOTE: If you receive the following error message
    Cannot rename New Folder. A file with the name you specified already exists. Specify a different filename.
    rename or delete the existing file or folder named Other.
