This article was previously published under Q214228 SYMPTOMS
When you open a Microsoft Word 2000 document that contains floating objects in a version of Word earlier than Word 97, all of the floating objects are converted to frames, and an extra paragraph mark is placed after the frame.
CAUSE
Versions of Word earlier than Word 97 do not support floating objects. When you open a Word document that contains floating objects in a pre-Word 97 version of Word, the floating objects are converted to objects in a frame. When the frame is inserted, an extra paragraph is inserted with it. This extra paragraph mark can change the layout of your document.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, use either of the following methods:
- Open the document using a pre-Word 97 version of Word, and then delete the unwanted paragraph marks (blank lines).
-or- - In Word 2000, open the document and move all of the floating objects into inserted frames. To do this, you need to add the Frame command to the Insert menu.
To add the Frame command to the Insert menu, follow these steps:- On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then click the Commands tab.
- In the Customize dialog box, under Categories, click All Commands.
- In the Commands list, click InsertFrame.
- Drag InsertFrame to the preferred location on the Insert menu. Release the mouse button when you see a horizontal bar indicating the location on the menu where the command will be inserted.
- Click Close.
After you have performed these steps, you can continue to move all of the floating objects into inserted frames by following these steps:
- Click Frame on the Insert menu to add a frame to your document.
- Move the floating object into the inserted frame using a drag-and-drop operation.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each floating object.
