WD2000: Go To Bookmark Selects the Entire Inserted Document (214196)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q214196

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Go To command on the Edit menu to go to the first bookmark that is contained in an inserted document, the entire inserted document is selected instead of just the bookmarked text you want.

CAUSE

You chose to link the document, and the bookmarked text is at the beginning of the inserted document.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Link to Document

Open the document that is to be inserted, and ensure that the first bookmarked text is not at the beginning of the document. If required, delete the first bookmark, add a blank line above the bookmarked text, and then insert the bookmark again. To view the bookmarks, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. Click to select the Bookmarks check box, and then click OK.

NOTE: Your bookmarks appear either as a large "I" or as large brackets ([]).
To insert the document as a link, do one of the following:
  • Use the Insert as link option. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In your new Word document, click File on the Insert menu.
    2. In the Insert File dialog box, select the file you want to insert.
    3. Click the down arrow on the Insert button and click Insert as link.
    -or-

  • Use the INCLUDETEXT field. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In your new Word document, click Field on the Insert menu.
    2. In the Field dialog box, under Field names, select INCLUDETEXT.
    3. In the Field codes box, after "INCLUDETEXT," type the full path and file name of the file you want to insert.
    4. Click OK.

Method 2: Insert Document

  1. Click File on the Insert menu.
  2. Select the document that contains the bookmarks, and then click Insert.

NOTE: Do not click the arrow and click Insert as Link. If you click Insert as Link, your document will be inserted with an INCLUDETEXT field, and you will have to use Method 1.
The document containing the bookmarks will be inserted as text, not as an INCLUDETEXT field. When you use the Go To command to go to the first bookmark contained in the inserted file, only the bookmarked text will be selected, not the entire included document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you use an INCLUDETEXT field, the entire document is selected when you use the Go To command to go to the first bookmark contained in the included document.
