SYMPTOMS

After you create a new document based on a template created with one of the following wizards:

Agenda Wizard
Fax Wizard
Table Wizard
Calendar Wizard
Resume Wizard
Memo Wizard

the following error message appears:
The wizard cannot use the active document. To run the wizard, choose New from the File menu and select the wizard name Wizard.
Some of the following error messages may also appear:

Agenda Wizard

  • If the template is based on the Agenda Wizard, after you click OK, the following error message appears in Word 2000:
The wizard cannot continue because an error has occurred (500).

Fax Wizard

  • If the template is based on the Fax Wizard, the following error message appears in Word 2000:
The wizard cannot continue because an error has occurred (509).

CAUSE

These errors occur because the StartWizard macro is retained in a new template based on the wizards listed in the "Symptoms" section.

RESOLUTION

Create a document based on the wizard that is generating the error message. Save this document as a template. The StartWizard macro is not retained in the new template. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click New.
  2. Click the Other Documents tab and then double-click the wizard that you want to base your template on.
  3. Follow the steps in the wizard to customize your template and then click Finish.
  4. On the File menu, click Save As.
  5. In the Save as type box, click Document Template (*.dot).
  6. Type the name you want to use for your new template in the File name box and then click Save.
