XL2000: Some Special Characters Are Changed in Imported Files (214039)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2000

This article was previously published under Q214039

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel 2000, the data source character set for various file types is not available in the Open dialog box (on the File menu, click Open). Therefore, certain special characters may be changed in imported files.

MORE INFORMATION

You cannot specify the character set when you open a file in Excel. For example, dBASE files are always imported using the ASCII character set, and FoxPro for Windows generates ANSI-DBF files. As a result of this automatic character formatting, some special characters may be lost or displayed incorrectly. For example, international characters, such as French and German accent marks, may be converted to their corresponding characters in the default character set.
