This article was previously published under Q211867

SYMPTOMS

When you save a document in a format other than Word Document (*.doc), and the Read-only recommended option is selected, Word does not save the Read-only Recommended option with the document.

NOTE: You do not receive a warning to alert you that the Read-Only recommended option will be lost.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you save a document with a password in a different format, such as Rich Text Format (*.rtf), the following message is displayed:
This document is password protected. Saving this document in a format other than a Word Document will result in the loss of this protection. Do you want to continue?
When you save a document in a format other than Word Document (*.doc) with the Read-only recommended option selected, Word does not display a similar message, and the Read-only recommended option is lost.

When you use the Read-only recommended option with Word documents, you are prompted to open the document as read-only the next time you open it. If you open it as read-only and make changes, you are prompted to save the document under a new file name.

To set the Read-only recommended option, follow these steps:
  1. Open the document that you want to open as read-only.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the Save tab, select the Read-only recommended check box, and then click OK.
