This article was previously published under Q211778

SYMPTOMS

After you insert a Windows Metafile (.wmf) or a Computer Graphics Metafile (.cgm) image into a Word document, the Rotate or Flip menu commands on the Draw menu of the Drawing toolbar (on the View menu, point to Toolbars and click to select Drawing) are unavailable.

CAUSE

The Rotate or Flip menu commands are not available if the object is an inline, ungrouped object.

WORKAROUND

To have the Rotate or Flip commands available on the Drawing toolbar, change the wrapping style of the object and then ungroup and regroup the object. To do this, use the following procedure:
  1. Change the wrapping style of the inline object to In front of text using the following steps:
    1. Right-click the picture and then click Format Picture on the shortcut menu.
    2. On the Layout tab, under Wrapping style, click to select In front of text and then click OK.
  2. Ungroup and then regroup the elements of the picture using the following steps:
    1. Click to select the picture.
    2. On the Drawing toolbar, click Draw and then click Ungroup.
    3. On the Drawing toolbar, click Draw and then click Group.
To rotate or flip the object, click to select the object. On the Drawing toolbar, click Draw, point to Rotate or Flip, and then click the option you want.
