Armada 4200 Hangs During Text-Mode Portion of Windows 2000 Setup (211279)

SYMPTOMS

When you are installing Windows 2000, your Compaq Armada 4200 computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) is enabled in the computer's BIOS, and the ACPIEnable option is set to a value of "1" in the Txtsetup.sif file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following workarounds:
  • To enable Advanced Power Management (APM) support and disable ACPI:

    1. Edit the Txtsetup.sif file on the boot drive and change the "ACPIEnable=1" line to "ACPIEnable=2" and then reboot to continue Setup.
    2. Enable APM support by using the APM tab in the Power Options tool in Control Panel.
  • Contact the manufacturer for a possible updated ACPI BIOS that is compatible with Windows 2000. If an update does not exist or the latest ACPI BIOS update exhibits the same symptoms, use the first method.

MORE INFORMATION

Enabling the ACPI option on a particular computer may involve downloading a flash for the BIOS and running some type of utility specific to the brand of computer. It is also possible that a particular computer may already have ACPI support in the BIOS and that it is enabled.

For more information about whether your computer's BIOS is already capable of ACPI, contact the manufacturer of the computer. Windows 2000 checks a list to determine if the BIOS you are using is considered compatible. The section in the Txtsetup.sif file that indicates whether a particular BIOS is compatible with ACPI is named [GoodACPIBios]. You can search this file to see if your computer is listed.
