WD2000: Browser-Incompatible Features Are Not Disabled When HTML Is Selected As Default File Format (210580)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q210580

SYMPTOMS

When you select Web page (*.HTM, *.HTML) as the default file format that Microsoft Word 2000 uses to save new documents, certain character formatting options (such as Shadow or Emboss) that are not supported by Web browsers may not be disabled as expected.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the registry key that controls these character formatting options is not updated until the first time that a document is saved as an .htm or .html file.

RESOLUTION

When you select Web page (*.HTM, *.HTML) as Word's default file format, the registry key that controls these character formatting options is updated the first time that you save a document as an .htm or .html file.

After this happens, those character formatting options that are not supported by Web browsers are disabled.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Word 2000.
