WD2000: Cross-Reference to Multilevel Item Does Not Contain Ending Punctuation (209655)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q209655

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a cross-reference to the paragraph number of an item formatted with a multilevel numbering style, the cross-reference does not include the ending punctuation. For example, if you have text formatted like this
   1. item
      1.1. item
         1.1.1. item

the cross-reference you create to one of these items looks similar to this:
   1
      1.1
         1.1.1

CAUSE

This is normal behavior in Word. The punctuation is retained for simple numbering formats, but the ending punctuation is removed from multilevel numbering formats. Microsoft implemented this functionality at the request of customer feedback.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, type a period immediately after you insert the cross-reference.
