WD2000: Moving Mouse Pointer Across Blank Area Shows Different Alignment Shapes (209570)

SYMPTOMS

When you move your mouse pointer across a blank area of your document, the mouse pointer shows different alignment shapes.

NOTE: This symptom occurs in print layout view or Web layout view only (on the View menu).

CAUSE

This functionality is by design and is a new feature called Click and Type. It is showing you how inserted text at that location will be formatted.

You can use the Click and Type feature to quickly insert text, graphics, tables, or other items in a blank area of a document. Just double-click in a blank area, and Click and Type automatically applies the paragraph formatting necessary to position the item where you double-clicked.

When you slowly move the mouse pointer across a blank area of your document from the left margin to the right margin, the mouse pointer shows the following paragraph alignment shapes in the following order:

   _____    _____      _____       _____      _____     _____
   ___      ___        ___          ___       ___         ___

   Left     Left       Left      Centered     Left      Right

The paragraph alignment shapes are explained in the following table.

Alignment Shape

When you double-click, Word inserts text that has

Left

A paragraph format of left-aligned.

NOTE: No tab stop position or first line indentation is set.

Left with indent

A paragraph format of left-aligned with a first line indent of 0.5-inches.

NOTE: A first-line indent by 0.5-inches is set, but no tab stop position is set.

Left

A paragraph format of left-aligned with a tab stop position inserted at the point that you double-click.

Centered

A paragraph format of center-aligned.

NOTE: No tab stop position or first line indentation is set.

Left

A paragraph format of left-aligned with a tab stop position inserted at the point that you double-click.

Right

A paragraph format of right-aligned.

NOTE: No tab stop position or first line indentation is set.

To Turn Off Click and Type

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Edit tab, click to clear the "Enable click and type" check box.
  3. Click OK to close Options.
