SYMPTOMS

If you create a simple list in Microsoft Word 2000, and you then attempt to format it as an Outlined Numbered list with a particular heading style, the selected heading style is not applied to the list.

For example, if you type the following

One
Two
Three

select these three lines, click Bullets and Numbering on the Format menu, and then click the Article I heading style on the Outline Numbered tab, this heading style is not applied to the list.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Select the list.
  2. On the standard toolbar, click the Bullet button.
  3. On the standard toolbar, click the Numbering button.
