WD2000: File Size Increases After Saving Word File as Web Page (209556)

SYMPTOMS

When you save a Word document as a Web page by using the Save as Web Page command on the File menu, the size of your file may be greater than you expected.

CAUSE

The size of your file depends on the type and extent of formatting in the file. Word adds Office-specific markup to the standard Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and cascading style sheet markup that allows Word to "round-trip" documents between binary and HTML format. Much of the information stored in the file consists of style definitions and font selections that help preserve formatting and page layout. Also stored in the file is information about which Office program was used to create it.

NOTE: A file that does not contain many styles or fonts may actually be smaller than the original file when saved as a Web page.

RESOLUTION

You can reduce the size of your file by using the Office HTML Filter in Word or by reducing the amount of metadata stored in the file.
