IEAK 4.0x: The Branding.cab File Is Not Updated after Installing or Reinstalling IEAK-Based Installation (209249)

SYMPTOMS

When you reinstall an Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) 4.0x-created package or install it on a computer that already has an IEAK-based installation, the branding information may not be updated.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Internet Explorer Setup checks each component before installation to determine if it has already been installed or if a newer version is available. With an IEAK-based installation, Internet Explorer Setup installs a Branding.cab file that contains most of the IEAK customizations. However, if this file is the same version as what is already installed, Setup does not install the Branding.cab file, and the custom branding is not applied.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To resolve this issue and make reinstalling the Branding.cab file succeed, use the appropriate method:

Change the Version Number

  1. Run the IEAK Wizard in Corporate Administrator mode, and then rebuild the package.
  2. In the Select Version Information dialog box, update the version number to a later version than the previous package, and then run Setup again.

Edit the Registry on Client Computers

On the client computer, edit the registry and remove the entry for the Branding.cab file from the following registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\GUID

where GUID is a variable GUID for the Branding.cab file that may begin with a greater than (>) character. Open each key, checking the ComponentIDs for the Branding.cab file. Remove this key from the registry to make the reinstallation of the Branding.cab file possible.
