SYMPTOMS

When you click a hyperlink to open a Microsoft Project 98 file in Microsoft Internet Explorer, the file may appear to not open, or may be extremely slow to open.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the Browse in same window check box is selected in the Windows file association for "Microsoft Project 8.0 Project" (.mpp) files.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Refresh the Page

In Internet Explorer, click the Back button on the toolbar, and then click the Forward button. You may need to do this twice.

Method 2: Change the "Browse In Same Window" Setting

Use the appropriate method for your operating system.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Windows 95 or Windows 98

  1. On the desktop, double-click My Computer.
  2. On the View menu, click Options (or Folder Options).
  3. Click the File Types tab.
  4. Under Registered file types, locate and select Microsoft Project 8.0 Project, and then click Edit.
  5. Click to clear the Browse in same window check box.
  6. Click OK.

Windows NT

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. To start Registry Editor, click Start, and then click Run. Type regedt32.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. In the left pane of Registry Editor, locate and select the following registry subkey (folder):

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSProject.Project.8

  3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following value:

    Value name: BrowserFlags
    Data type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 8

  4. Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.
Now, clicking the link will open the file in Microsoft Project 98 instead of opening the file in the browser.

STATUS
