PUB2000: WordPerfect Filter Defaults to .DOC File Name Extension (207637)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 2000

This article was previously published under Q207637

SYMPTOMS

When you open a WordPerfect document in Microsoft Publisher, the default file name extension Publisher uses is .doc. In addition, when you search for WordPerfect documents in Publisher, only those files that have a .doc extension will appear in the list of files found. Other files will not be listed. The default extension should be an asterisk (*), which indicates any character combination.

CAUSE

The most commonly used file name extension for WordPerfect files is .doc. However, WordPerfect does not add this extension automatically and you can specify any extension or no extension.

RESOLUTION

To open a WordPerfect file with any file name extension, click Open on the File menu. In the Publication Name box, type *.*, select the file you want, and then click Open.

NOTE: You can also specify the extension you used when you saved the WordPerfect file.

NOTE: You cannot modify the extension in the Find File dialog box. When you search for WordPerfect files, Publisher will look only for files with a .DOC extension.
