WD2000: Formatting Switch Is Removed When You Change Text Wrapping (204582)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q204582

SYMPTOMS

When you add a formatting switch to the field code of an embedded object and then change the text wrapping of the object, the switch is removed from the EMBED field.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:
  • You manually add a formatting switch to the EMBED field.

    -and-
  • You change the text wrapping of the object from In line with text to a "floating" wrapping style (for example, Square).

    -and-
  • You change the wrapping style back to In line with text.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, add the formatting switch back to the EMBED field. For example, to add the \s switch back to the EMBED field, follow these steps:
  1. Click to select the embedded object.
  2. Press SHIFT+F9 to turn on the field code of the object. You should now see a field code similar to the following:

    {EMBED Paint.Picture}

  3. At the end of the EMBED field, type \s so that the EMBED field looks similar to the following:

    {EMBED Paint.Picture \s}

  4. Press SHIFT+F9 to turn off the EMBED field code. The embedded object should now retain its new size when you scale or crop it.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

An EMBED field inserts an object that was created in another program that supports OLE. Word inserts the EMBED field when you insert objects -- such as Microsoft Excel worksheet objects -- by using the Object command (on the Insert menu, click Object), the Paste Special command (on the Edit menu, click Paste Special), or a toolbar button.

The EMBED field is not available in the Field dialog box (on the Insert menu, click Field), and you cannot manually insert the field. However, you can directly modify switches in an existing EMBED field.

\s Returns an embedded object to its original size when the field is updated. To keep the sizing or cropping you applied to an embedded object, delete this switch, if it is present.
\* mergeformat Applies the sizing and cropping of the previous result to the new result. To preserve previously applied sizing and cropping when you update the field, do not delete this switch from the field.

For more information about the EMBED field and its valid switches, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type embed in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.
