WD2000: Picture Location Changes When Wrapping Style Is Changed (203913)

SYMPTOMS

When you change the Wrapping Style of a drawing object to In line with text from another wrapping style, such as Square, you may find that the drawing object moves to the beginning of the document or to another unexpected location.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the drawing object's wrapping style has been changed to another format, such as Square, and then text is inserted between the drawing object and drawing object's anchor. Then, when the wrapping style of the drawing object is changed back to In line with text (the default wrapping style for a drawing object), the drawing object returns to the original location of the drawing object's anchor.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, reposition the drawing object using a drag-and-drop operation.
To prevent this behavior from happening in the future, follow these steps to move the drawing object's anchor before changing the object's wrapping style to In line with text:
  1. On the View menu, click Options.
  2. Click to select the View tab.
  3. Click to select the Object Anchors and All check boxes, and then click OK.
  4. Select the object and then drag the object's anchor to a different paragraph mark.

NOTE: When you select the object, white square handles will appear around the outside edges of the object box and an anchor will appear at a paragraph mark in the body of the document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Word 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

You can also use Advanced Layout to control the way your object is positioned. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Select the object that you want to reposition.
  2. On the Format menu, click Picture, click the Layout tab, and then click Advanced.
  3. In the Advanced Layout dialog box, click the Picture Position tab, and then select the options you want for your horizontal and vertical anchors; for example, margin, page, and paragraph. You can align the object relative to the anchor, or you can enter a precise numeric position for the object relative to the anchor.
TIP: You can attach an object to a paragraph so that they move together in two ways:
  • To ensure that the selected object moves up or down with the paragraph it is anchored to, select the Move object with text check box.
  • To ensure that an object remains anchored to the same paragraph when you move the object, select the Lock anchor check box.
