SUMMARY

Global language detection occurs automatically in Internet Explorer. If you select the Auto-Detect option (on the View menu, point to Encoding), the correct language setting is automatically determined. If the correct language setting cannot be determined and you know what language should be selected, you can manually set the appropriate language.

Most Web pages contain information that tells the browser what language encoding (the language and the character set) to use. If the page does not include that information (and you have enabled the Auto-Select feature), Internet Explorer can usually determine the appropriate language encoding.

To use the Auto-Select feature, you must install the corresponding language support files on the computer. You can obtain these files from the Internet Explorer add-on page, or by clicking the encoding items in the Encoding menu.

To enable the Auto-Select feature:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the View menu, point to Encoding, and then click Auto-Select to place a check mark next to the item.
To manually select the language encoding for a Web page:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the View menu, point to Encoding, point to More, and then click the appropriate language.

    NOTE: If you are prompted to download language support components, click Download. If the Auto-Select feature or a specific language pack is not installed on your computer, you are prompted to download the files as needed.
Adding languages does not guarantee that the computer has a font that can display Web pages in the appropriate language. If you want to receive a prompt when you need to add fonts, use the following steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. On the Advanced tab, click to select the Enable Install on Demand check box.
You can then download a multiple language support pack to display pages in the appropriate language.

You can add a Language Encoding button to your toolbar to make switching between languages quicker and easier.
