Memory Usage Increases Incrementally with New Webs (201872)

The information in this article applies to:

  • FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions from Microsoft
  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q201872

SYMPTOMS

When you create a large number of FrontPage Webs on a computer running Internet Information Server (IIS) 2.0 or IIS 3.0, Inetinfo.exe uses all of the server's RAM.

Note: The number of Webs will vary, based on the size of each web and the amount of RAM on the server.

CAUSE

Every time a new Web is created in FrontPage, a call to the function InetInfoSetAdminInformation from Infoadmn.dll is made, causing some memory to be consumed. With each new Web, more calls to the function are made, increasing the memory consumption until you run out.

RESOLUTION

Upgrade to IIS version 4.0 or later.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Memory usage increases with each new Web that is created. The size of the increase in memory is proportional to the number of Webs present. You will eventually run out of Virtual Memory and the computer will stop responding. You can restart the IIS computer when the memory runs low (as a temporary fix); however, this will not prevent the problem from happening again.
