Sleep Timer Settings Ignored in Windows 2000 (201511)

SYMPTOMS

When you specify sleep timer settings in the Power Management tool, the settings may take effect. In addition, you may be unable to resume from Suspend mode without turning your computer off and then back on, and you may receive "divide by 0" error messages.

CAUSE

This behavior is commonly caused by a problem with a computer's Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) Basic Input/Output System (BIOS).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, contact the computer manufacturer to inquire about the availability of an updated BIOS for your computer.

ACPI-compliant computers require a separate real-time clock that is used to regulate power management events. This timer, which is a hardware device on the motherboard, determines when parts of the computer should be suspended and resumed. If the BIOS is not written properly, the operating system may ignore the clock, and the behavior described earlier may occur.
