Random Errors with Transactions Event ID 12293 (201143)

SYMPTOMS

The following events randomly appear in the application event log on an Internet Information Server (IIS) computer running Microsoft Site Server version 3.0, Commerce Edition:
Event id 12293

The description for Event ID ( 12293 ) in Source ( Microsoft Site Server 3.0 ) could not be found. It contains the following insertion string(s): [Harbor Breeze]Component Execution failed for component[0x8] hr: 0x80004005 ProgID: Commerce.SaveReceipt.1 The operation requested by the application is not allowed if the object is closed. [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Failed to enlist on calling object's transaction

Commerce Server: Connection Error:
Event id 0

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( COM Contexts ) could not be found. It contains the following insertion string(s): Failed to enlist in DTC: SQL state 25S12, native error -2147168242, error message [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Distributed transaction error.

CAUSE

This error can occur if the MSDTC is not the correct version or there is a mismatch of versions between multiple computers running MSDTC.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, upgrade the MSDTC service to the Windows NT SP4 version of DTC. The MSDTC service can be updated in one of the following ways:
  • Download the latest MSDTC from the following location:

    ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/distapps/MTS/Public- Fixes/usa/DTC/SvcPack/i386/dtcsetup.exe.

    NOTE: This will update the MSDTC service and associated files when executed.

  • Install the NTOP on the SQL Server 6.5 computer.

  • Upgrade to Windows NT SP4 on the SQL Server 6.5 computer.
